På fredagen var det full fart igen :) Först hade vi ju vår vanliga jour och Ilmari hade en presentation om deras Somedi-projekt. Därefter började EduFinlands pikkujoulut som samlade en massa avatars. Vi hade jätte roligt och alla dansade, skrinnade eller drack Nalle-öl. Senare på kvällen besökte jag finska saunabileet (också varje fredag), var det fanns kostymtävling med temat "sagor". Känner inte så mycket folk där förutom Helena, som har varit med på esperanto kurs.

Talvi on saapunut :) Jotkin simit ovat saaneet asianmukaisen lumisen maan ja valkoiset rinteet. EduFinland:lla voi luistella ja perjantaina vietetään pikkujouluja. Itsekin tuunasin pikku tönöni talvisilla kukkasilla ja jouluvaloilla. Swedish Orientation saarella on myös lumiset maisemat ja siellä odotetaan jo innolla Lucia-juhlia! Sinänsä jännittävää kuinka nämä kaksi maailmaa kohtaavat ja asukkailla on tarve tuoda rl-tunnelmaa myös SL-maillensa. Mutta ainakin jossain on takuuvarmasti lunta ja sitä voi tehdä mielin määrin lisää!

Hello again - back to business! Greetings from some e-learning conferences where Second Life is still going strong :) I heard some nice presentations of different uses of SL and will visit the places and tell you more about them in the near future.

The first important step in avatars' life is how to orientate in the world. There are several orientation islands and in the beginning you'll just land on one of them. I don't even remember my first place since I had Sammy to teleport me right away to a more serious place ;) Besides "real" orientation islands (like Lindens Lab's Orientation Island, newBerlin, SeraKorea, etc.) there are some smaller places for the purpose. I personally like most of the orientation track in the Swedish Orientation island (slurl), it's very clear and simple.

Kuttara Zen (slurl) is a Japanese garden for avatar training and it's used in several universities. Its' creator from Pima Community College (USA) praised the place for a good place for new students to test their skills. It's a very small place with some tracks over the water. The trick is to move around without falling into the ocean! The biggest problem with the place was that the pictures loaded a very long time, even though I have a brand-new computer with lots of memory (but what a pleasure it was to move around :) In Kuttara Zen you can practice how to change environmental settings (some items don't show otherwise), how to dance etc. A nice idea to have something interactive in the place, but maybe I was expecting something more.

Visited some Australian places today:

• sim Australia with fireworks, surfers beach club, coral reef and Sydney harbour
• sim ABC Island This place has totally changed since I last visited it. Earlier you could wander around the streets in Melbourne, but now it contained different zones with ABC News. The only thing that reminded from the past was a huge sandbox tower.
• sim Billabong outback, nature trail (only for group members :(, Ayes rock and a nice bar :)
• sim Ponderosa another Sydney harbour!
• sim Ponden with Top Dingo Shop and Gallery, nice swimming suites
• sim Eperance, The Australian Film TV and Radio School
• sim RMIT, RMIT University, exhibitions
• sim Bracket, CPA Australia Congress Centre
• and last, but not least sim jokaydia, nice people for educational uses of Second Life

Gestern Abend habe ich in der Preussen Schule an einem Scriptkurs teilgenommen. Etwa 15 Avatars haben einen automatischen Bilderrahmen gebastelt. Das ging sehr langsam voran, aber war ja ein Anfängerkurs. Der Lehrer hat sehr gründlich erklärt, was zu bauen war, so dass auch diejenigen, die keine Hintergrund in der Programmierung hatten, gut folgen konnten. Das Skript war sehr einfach, aber damit kann man gut z.B. Diashows machen. Und alles das noch umsonst :)

Das interessante war, dass Sim Preussen auch Berlin Mitte war, so es gibt also wenigstens zwei Berliner Weltuhren in SL!

Burning Life jättitapahtuma käsittää simikaupalla taidetta ja tapahtumaa. See some really weird stuff and avatars! Vielä tämän viikonlopun kuten Oktoberfestkin. (Kuvassa jonkin taideteoksen sisällä!)

Myös EduFinland-saarella tapahtuu syksyllä. Eilen seurasimme Studia generalian ensimmäistä luentoa Sammyn ja Nikolain kanssa (huomaa virvokkeet ;)

I woke up very early last Saturday to follow a couple of sessions in jokaydia Unconference. First Jass Easterman told how she has been using SL with volunteer students. She had some very good points of how to build a lesson in SL. One aspect was students with disabilities and we heard that some students used Dragon Naturally Speaking within SL.

Secondly there was a session about "Sustainability in and of Second Life". Leigh Blackall lead a discussion of renewable energy technologies, ecological footprint, environmental organizations and how to combine environmental issues in SL with RL (see an excellent video). It was nice to see that avatars are not just nerds, but at least try to think environmental aspects as well :)

The first session was lead only by chat discussion! That was kind of weird first, but actually it was quite pleasant. You had time to read the presentation and you could also save it and all the useful links afterwards. Whereas the second session, as the most of lessons I've seen in SL, used voice chat. That's also nice, but you must concentrate more intensively, fix first the voice level for each speaker and you don't usually record the session. Both cases have its' good sides.

It was interesting to take part in the Australian unconference where there were around 25 participants from Australia, North America and Europe. We'll see how popular the Finnish equivalent Konfabulaari 2008 will be!

Today was the European Language Day and I noticed LiteraTour would celebrate it also at the Swedish Institute. At the balcony there were tables and chairs under different flags, so I thought people would gather around them to discuss in the language in question. But unfortunately it was a meeting of some kind of literature circle and all the participants had read a book in advance. So Aino, Nikolai and me felt us a bit outsiders. But nevertheless we had fun and visited the institute more carefully. And Aino joined me later in München :)

Saluton! Tänään opiskelin esperantoa suomeksi :) Taneli Hak piti tunnin mittaisen opetuksen viidelle avatarille. Ensin hän jakoi pari notecardia ja kertoili sitten kielioppiasioita. Välillä pidettiin ääniharjoituksia (ope antoi mallia) ja sitten taas opiskeltiin lisää. Hieman olin pihalla, sillä tunti oli jo kolmas sarjassa, mutta ihan mielenkiintoista oli. Kiitos vaan Ainolle ja Khiiralle vinkistä :) Gxis!

Lahti ja Salpausselkä ovat avanneet ovensa SL:ssä. Koulutuskeskus Salpauksen sivuilta löytyvät myös hyvät SL:n käyttöohjeet (pdf). Koulutuskeskusten lisäksi saaren toimijana on myös Hyvä Yritys -hanke, joten mielenkiintoista nähdä miten suomalaiset yritykset ottavat SL:n käyttöönsä. Tästä aiheesta on myös tulossa seminaari, kuten Sammy jo kertoikin.

Joensuun yliopiston saari oli ensimmäinen suomalaisten kokonainen ja EduFinland tuli pian perässä. Joitakin muita yksittäisiä suomalaisia paikkoja on myös tiedossa kuten Yoen Kievari, jolla on myös tapahtumakalenteri. Metaversal Arts-merkin takana on myös suomalaisia avataria.

Ja tiedä häntä mitä alueita on suunnitteilla... Myös esim. tämän vuotisilla IT2008-päivillä on SecondLife-esitys Tampereen yliopiston puolesta!

Det är roligt att skapa nytt i SL som kläder :) Idag gjorde jag för min vän Nikolai som sysslar med NopolaNews en t-shirt och lippis. Lite för stor blev den, men man lär ju medan man gör! Tidigare har jag ju sytt ihop HY-skjortor (se bilden på förra uppteckningen).

Busy day today :) Visited eLearning 2.0 conference which was streamed from Kista, Sweden. About 30 avatars followed it at the Swedish Institute Island and 6 avatars of them were from Finland :) It is difficult to mix a real life session with SL, so the jokes were often missed. But it was a nice try and you always learn some new points.


Then there was also a very short presentation at the Kamimo Island. It was part of Eurocall conference in Budapest. Unfortunately there were some technical problems and the presentation was very short. But also an interesting case, 'cause the speaker made his speech from SL to RL! In SL there were only a couple of avatars listening, but maybe a whole seminar room irl?!

And in between the seminars there was the duty at the university land, where friends got together again :)

Helsingin yliopiston lukukauden avajaisia oli mahdollista seurata myös livenä SL:ssä. Paikalle saapuikin 16 avataria aina Joensuuta ja Turkua myöten. Tarjolla oli virvokkeita, eivätkä kuiskailut takapenkiltä häirinneet rehtoria ;)

SL passt auch ausgezeichnet für Sport! Auf der Calli Island kann man Frühsport treiben, laufen, radeln, beachvolley spielen,tanzen und natürlich Fussball spielen. Und naher gibt's Parties :D

Museums in SL are often made after their original buildings in RL. The exhibitions follow also the same concept as in RL. This wouldn't have to be so, but it's maybe the easiest way to start a museum activity in SL. And why not saunter around the rooms and see if the museum is worth of a visit in RL. At least your feet don't get sore!

Today I visited the Natural History Museums of Vienna (sim Forum Europe) and Florence (sim Maskio). Both were made after their analogue settings in RL. Vienna had nice rooms either showing a photorealistic picture of the room in RL (picture) and rooms with prim objects. They had a little bit interactivity and visitor could make dinosaurs growl and open their mouths. I was however looking for some more information about the specimens. Florence, on the other hand had boards with lots of small text in Italian and objects stuffed in showcases, not so brilliant idea in SL, I think.

Research Center (sim imagiLEARNING) had a nice exhibition about fossils from Colorado's Western Slope. One could visit a small room with pictures of fossil insects while hearing slow jazz music. Outside the exhibition hall you could hear a short podcast about building in SL. The exhibitions and podcasts change, so it's worth of another visit.

På tur i Skandinavien! Man kan börja med 3D-kartan över Sverige (ovan sim Bagder). Sverige och Danmark är ledande länder av Skandinavien i SL. Båda länderna har fina orientation öar. The Second House of Sweden är ett fenomen i SL och arkitektonisk bland de bästa i SL. På området finns det också en trevlig strandbastu. Wonderful Denmark är flera sims området med bl.a. Vikingecenter. Norge har några få ställen t.ex. Bryggen var man kan fiska. Island kommer ännu efteråt, men det har redan bildats gruppen "Iceland in SL" som samlar Island fans.

Just amazing, one of SL's best places I've seen! Universum where you can meditate, practice tai chi or just enjoy the incredible view. This week only in Second Pride Festival 2008.

Efter att ha planterat träd och sökt efter diverse skripter kände jag mig för lite avkoppling. Hittade en farväl live konsert för SLang Life magazine och vem spelade där om inte vår gamla bekant Kourosh Eusebio! Sammy och jag hörde ju honom i SL5B-konsert och gillade mycket hans elektroniska piano musik. Mycket avspännande :)

Sammyn blogi-vinkistä vierailin Googlen Lively-maailmassa, mutta kuten kommentoin, en päässyt edes alkua pidemmälle jonkun bugin vuoksi. Vierailin myös kiinalaisten HiPiHi-maailmassa melkein yhtä huonolla menestyksellä! Se on myös beta-vaiheessa. Sinne pääsi sentään sisään, mutta olin saanut kiinankielisen käyttöliittymän! Liikkuminen tuotti myös vaikeuksia, kunnes löysin ohjeet W, A, S, D -näppäinten käyttöön. Zoomausta en kuitekaan hallinnut, joten tämänkin maailman valloitus jäi toiseen kertaan.

Hieman tämä muissa maailmoissa matkailu toi perspektiiviä tähän virtuaalielämään. Mielenkiintoista nähdä miten vuosien päästä: pääsenkö ilman uusia kirjautumisia vierailemaan muissa maailmoissa, tällä hetkellä taidan kuitenkin pitäytyä SL:ssä. Tulipahan taas todistettua, että oma maa mansikka, muu maa mustikka!

After the "safe" SL5B fair area the everyday seeking for new places has begun. Still looking for nice japanese places...





Kumamoto Japan is maybe one of the nicest and there is also a japanese steam bath :) You can enjoy two tubs after you have changed your clothes in a chaste fitting-room.

Of the japanese orientation islands the Meltingdots seems to be the most popular and you even get some instructions from the fellow avatars in japanese ;)

Little more of a real japanese city atmosphere you'll get in the Chimi mouryou sim. But it's very little and its owner is a killer bunny!

And of course you should not forget the visit to the Tokyo Tower!

SL5B-alueelta löysin Bayerin valtionkirjaston ständin, jonka kautta päädyin kuuntelemaan esitelmää "Mass digitisation at Munich Digitisation Centre". Mielenkiintoinen esitys, joka kesti puolisen tuntia. Noin 28 000 kirjaa on digitisoitu tähän mennessä ja niiden tuottaminen SL:n on myös alkanut. Esitelmän pito toimi hyvin SL:ssä, mukana tekninen tuki, joka kyseli, että kaikki kuulevat. Ääni liikkui mediakanavaa pitkin eikä äänichattinä, joka minimoi tekniset ongelmat. Kuuntelemassa oli avataria ainakin Saksasta, Italiasta ja Suomesta ;)

Esitelmässä näytettiin myös video kirjaskannerista, joka skannaa kaksi sivua kerrallaan, eikä kirjan edes tarvitse olla 180 astetta auki (ongelma vanhojen kirjojen kohdalla).

SL heißt Leute kennenlernen. Heute bin ich Yeli im SL5B-Gebiet begegnet. Sie mochte Zirkus und hat mit TrinitySisters Ring jongliert. Später haben wir uns im keltischen Steinring getroffen. Zum Schluß hat sie gefragt "r u single?" :D Habe nur gelacht und Bye! gewinkt.

Ofta efterlyser jag platser i SL som inte sku vara från irl. Från SL5B-området hittade jag något ditåt. Man hade försökt göra ett universum och genom teleskopet kunde man se solsystemet. (Fast så riktigt fungerade det inte och rymden gick ofta i sär, men jag gillade idéen i alla fall :)

Although I do not generally like closed places in SL, the Victorian houses made an exception. Just wander in the rooms, listen to music and hear the poets whisper...

Miksi SL:ssä ei koskaan sada? Meidän unelmamaailmassa kaikki siis ovat aina kauniita ja nauttivat kesäisestä auringonpaisteesta. Ilta ja yökin ovat erittäin lyhyet simeissä, vaikka omistajat kyllä voivat asetuksia säätää. Enemmän yllätyksiä ja vaihtelua!





Talvisia paikkoja löytyy joitakin, kuten esim. SL5B-alueen Second Life Children tarinapallossa. Vincent van Gogh:n museossa voi sitä vastoin kokea sateen japanilaisella sillalla.

Heute hat Educational Centre for ICT sein Bereitschaftsdienst gehabt. Während Sammy mit Besuchern unterhalten hat, habe ich ein Fußballplatz oder ähnliches gebaut. Ein fliegender Ball hat uns viel Spaß gemacht :) Das EduFinland gebiet hat ganz viele Besucher: jeden Tag im Durchschnitt 12 Besucher seit 12. Juni.
